How Heartburn Occurs

Every year, more than 70 million Americans experience a condition known as heartburn.  When some of the stomach acid goes up the esophagus, it begins to corrode the lining of the esophagus, which causes the burning sensation that is most commonly known as heartburn.  There are several ways a person can get heartburn, the most common way is when a person lies down after a large meal.  The bottom of the esophagus has an opening that allows food to pass down into the stomach.  If a person lies down after eating, the stomach acid may find its way up the esophagus, causing a feeling of burning in the chest.
