Why You Need Aquarium Salt

September 2nd, 2010 by admin

Aquarium salt is needed if you want to keep a healthy freshwater tank.  Most tank experts  use aquarium salt in  freshwater  as  a preventive  against  common infections.  Adding a few drops of tank salt will help prevent the growth of common bacteria in the water, since most pathogens like bacteria have no internal organs that will help them compensate for the changes in salt concentration, while the fish do.

In saltwater tank, adding salt is important  to prevent changes in the composition of water. When it comes to freshwater fish showing signs of distress, the classic preventive strategy would be to add 1 tbsp  of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of aquarium water.

As a preventive, most freshwater fish such as  Corydoras and many tank plants can tolerate  1 tbsp of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water. Most fish do  poorly  when more than this amount is added to the water. Make sure to follow package instructions when using aquarium salt.
