Our Useless Center Island Countertop

October 30th, 2009 by admin

When we first bought our 1890′s farm house, the kitchen, though large was a a hodgepodge of “improvements” done by various owners throughout it’s long history. I have difficulty describing, through words alone, the injustice done to what was essentially a graceful, accommodating, home at it’s core. There was an island dividing the space. Everyone said, “Oh, you have an island!” Yes, I would have loved the island, were it not for two very important things: 1. It contained the sink, but not a dishwasher or the space to add one. 2. It’s location made the whole layout of the kitchen impossible to use effectively. I was way to close to the counter behind it. This made it so only one person could work at a time, even though we always had multiple cooks. We needed to compare prices of a new kitchen layout and new quartz countertops prices as well. I learned from this experience that when doing a kitchen remodel, good planning both for now and in the future, is essential to actually qualify it as an improvement.
